Castles in Wales

I love to write about medieval times and i'm pretty lucky to live right around the corner from these two beauties.....

Ewloe Castle and Hawarden Castle, (castles in Wales) both entirely different from yet completely clad in mystery.  Not much is known of Ewloe castle, least of all why someone felt the need to build a castle in the middle of the woods. There is no viewpoint advantage since it is surrounded by ancient trees and rather hidden from sight. Tucked away, deliberately secretive for some unknown reason and cast into a likely dark, forboding existence, it is now nothing more than a ruin. A shrine of forgotten tales that one can muster up from the depths of their imaginations, whether it be folklore, thriller, horror or fairytale, there is a wealth of knowledge buried here, just waiting for stories to be thought up.

Hawarden castle is less mysterious since there is a wealth of history here, far better documented though no less magical. Two castles, one overlooking the other reside in the surrounding fields. The younger was built in the 18th century and is a perfect representation of a fairytale castle. Though the other, medieval, original castle lies hidden behind a small door, one you may completely miss should you not know where to find it.

Through the red gate that takes you from a small village into effect countryside, complete with grazing sheep, a short walk is required. In the Summer months, when the trees hide the castle from view, it is more difficult to see, though as winter approaches and the leaves shed, the mystical, ghostly appearance of the 12th century castle can be seen towards the left. It is small and in ruin, though on a misty night, one can quite easily imagine knights of old fighting for valour, riding their steeds ups the hills. It can be accessed through Leopold's gate, opened to the public just a few times each year. This of course only adds to the enticing mystery of it all.

Just of couple of the many castles in Wales
